Panama's Aquatic Adventure

The Chagres National Park has very little access via roadway and the natives who inhabit these forests are happy to keep it this way. The Embera Rainforest Tribes are sustainable peoples, living off the land and the river and never venturing into civilization. The only way for us to witness them is by “Piragua,” (handmade wooden canoe) or raft, down the crystal cool waters of the mighty Charges River.

The rainforest is dense and thick with hundreds of species of flora and fauna in every direction, making for some incredibly beautiful hiking. Tapir and jaguars are seldom encountered, but the forest is full of monkeys, sloth, toucan, river otter, iguana and of course plenty of fish.

We will spend a couple wonderfully lazy days at the beach, snorkeling and sea kayaking the beautiful San Blas Archipelago islands. We will also be lucky to spend time amongst the Kuna Natives of the Kuna Yala territory; you will no doubt revel in the bright colors of their native dress and feel compelled to take garments home for yourself. The Kuna Yala didn’t have a single road connecting them with the rest of Panama until 2007; their efforts to preserve their own identity, and control over San Blas has made it possible to keep this region the pristine paradise it is today.
